I think everyone had a "Darrin Hudson" in their lives. Darrin Hudson was in my high school, back in Marlboro, NJ. You know, that person that you had to one-up all the time. Didn't matter what it was: Gear, hair, grades, sports, whatever...it was ON. Well for Darrin and I...it was kicks. Plain and simple. Oddly enough, in a school with over 1000 kids, me and him were the only 2 really into sneakers back then. This is my blog dedicated to Darrin. This is to tell Darrin that I'm still out there, and if he wants to battle, here it is son!! Bring it!! I've since lost touch with Darrin, but thanks to him, you all get to check out the kicks I have amassed over the years. So it is here, that I will archive every pair of shoes I own. It’ll include detailed photos, a grading system, a little tidbit behind each one and every single one will be available for purchase. (Simply POST A COMMENT with your offer). Some other little goodies sprinkled throughout also. Even if I updated a different shoe every week, it would take me about 3 years to complete this project. So sit back and enjoy! The project begins January 1st, 2006...

UNINSURED.

A little collaboration with Wendy Dembo from Cool Hunting (and soon to be mom!).
I'll let her explain how this went down.
"Last year when The Gap came out with their (red) campaign, the first word/s that popped into my head, was insu(red)/unisu(red). I wondered why they didn't make an uninsu(red) shirt. They did a few kind of ironic shirts like bo(red) and ti(red).
I think that insurance is going to be the touch point for the 2008 Presidential election. And I thought that making these shirts could hopefully get some uninsured kids to think about their need for health insurance, perhaps even the need for universal health care.
I ran into Jeff of the Reed Space at a party and told him about my idea. And he thought that it was a good idea too. He designed and manufactured the shirts. It took some time, but starting Friday the shirts will be available at the Reed Space. We hope that they will start a dialogue...."

Wow...this is what collaboration used to be like. Two people getting together to make something simply because it SHOULD be made.

I just walked cross-town wearing the shirt after having coffee with Wendy this morning. I got a lot of great reactions! Everything from nervously diverted eyes (mostly around beth isreal med center), to nodding heads and knowing laughs (nearing the east village) all those e.v. freelancers, like me, they know the story. I even think the man who sold me tomatoes at the farmers market in U. Sq. gave me a discount because of the shirt - he was giving me a very sympathetic look when he lowered the price. It did NOT, however, deter a mad right-on-red taxi driver from almost running me down - I was so sure drivers would be more careful not to injure me once they knew I was Uninsured! Great shirt, crucial message!

I read your blog about the t-shirt with uninsur(red) on the front and it would be a good t-shirt to make, but I think that the whole RED campaign had to do with Africa and not with the United States. I'm not from GAP, but I think that is what the RED campaign was focusing on. Just wanted to let you know and I do take into consideration that they did make the bo(red) and etc.

Dope shirt...maybe it will raise some more awareness. I applaud dope gear that mixes design with social statements.
