To Darrin Hudson

I think everyone had a "Darrin Hudson" in their lives. Darrin Hudson was in my high school, back in Marlboro, NJ. You know, that person that you had to one-up all the time. Didn't matter what it was: Gear, hair, grades, sports, whatever...it was ON. Well for Darrin and I...it was kicks. Plain and simple. Oddly enough, in a school with over 1000 kids, me and him were the only 2 really into sneakers back then. This is my blog dedicated to Darrin. This is to tell Darrin that I'm still out there, and if he wants to battle, here it is son!! Bring it!! I've since lost touch with Darrin, but thanks to him, you all get to check out the kicks I have amassed over the years. So it is here, that I will archive every pair of shoes I own. It’ll include detailed photos, a grading system, a little tidbit behind each one and every single one will be available for purchase. (Simply POST A COMMENT with your offer). Some other little goodies sprinkled throughout also. Even if I updated a different shoe every week, it would take me about 3 years to complete this project. So sit back and enjoy! The project begins January 1st, 2006...

NINA x 2.

jeanvalley.jpg

acaivalley.jpg

My friend Jean recently introduced me to a new store and a dope delicacy. The store is called Valley and its pretty close to Reed Space. It's geared towards the ladies but a great place to take wifey. Clothing/Art/Nails/Waxing...what more can your lady ask for? In addition to all that, the owner of Valley, Nina, whips up an amazing treat called Acai. I never heard of it before (because I don't watch Orpah apparently) but as it explains on their website:
"Acai (ah-sigh-ee) is an all-natural energy fruit from Amazon palmberries. Harvested in the rainforests of Brazil, Açai tastes like a vibrant blend of berries and chocolate, and has been used for thousands of years by the natives of Brazil who believe this magical fruit to have amazing healing and nutritional properties.
...Acai contains the most complete array of vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids, and has more protein than an egg. Studies show that Acai has up to thirty-three times the antioxidant content as red wine grapes. No other berry or fruit product comes close to matching the nutritional and antioxidant content of Acai."
Nothing like being good AND good for you.

BACK @ HOME.

tylerapt2.jpg

What a joy. I've been home for over 2 weeks now. And New York City is beginning to feel like, well, home again. I rarely ever go out to clubs and bars, but APT is a solid spot that always has some good music running. This is especially true when Tyler and the Rude Movement crew comes in. Always dope music on the 1s and 2s.

The New York City basketball illumnati breaks bread at Noho Star. Keep on top of NRF activites here. I heard rumors that cats in L.A. are about to start a similar basketball league. I hereby challenge them to a run. Our champs vs theirs. BRING IT!

CLARKS.

Oh my lord. I am speechless. Quite honestly, DJ Clark Kent could have made me a pair of Skippies and I would have been blessed. But these?!? THESE?!??!? It just ain't it right. To Wear? Or Not To Wear? That is the question....

1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9...

And so begins #10.
2007 marks the 10th Anniversary of Staple Design. We're now shipping the first deliveries of the Spring 2007 collection. Reed Space has been closed the last few days in order to spruce itself up for the release. (Thanks to Suzette for the great paint job.)
Over 25 arists, creatives, organizations, and agencies have contributed to the Staple 10th Anniversary collection. I personally assigned each person an ANAGRAM (a word or phrase formed from another by rearranging its letters) to use as the basis for the inspiration for their design. I purposely assigned certain anagrams to specific people..something that I thought would really get their creative juices flowing...or something that just made perfect sense for them. The outcome is truly phenomenal. FIND THEM ALL! COLLECT THEM ALL!

pigeoncap_grey.jpg
Let's start with the banger. We worked with New Era on the infamous Black Pigeon Cap a few months ago. Now feast your eyes on the Grayscale Pigeon New Era. For the 129 people out there with a Pigeon Dunk, now you can rock this to match them perfectly. For the 40 million others who didn't get it, you can now live vicariously thru this bad boy. At Reed Space 2/22.

colettex.jpg
Sarah and the gang at Colette have literally reinvented what the word "retail" means. They set the bar, and continue to demolish it by setting the standard ever higher. Its stores like Colette that allow stores like Reed Space to exist. When Staple was picked up by Colette a few years ago, it was like a dream come true.
Anagram: COLETTE/TO ELECT...Vote for your favorite store in Paris! Colette!

stashx.jpg
When I was an intern at PNB Nation (pre-Nick Cannon) back in 1994, Zulu asked me to run a disk over to their silkscreener. The person I dropped that disk off to was a man working the press named STASH. My...How times have changed! One of the most inspirational people in this world...Both from an artistic standpoint and a business one.
Anagram: SKILLS/KILLS...In the graf AND the real world, only one thing matters: SKILLS. Stash does a self portrait design with himself spraying paint out of a semi-automatic rifle. The detail in this design is dope.

paulmx.jpg
Back in 1999, when I was art directing The Fader Magazine, I did a story on "Collections" and interviewed a man named Paul Mittleman. He had his own company called 1972 where he did design and marketing for brands like Gravis, Burton and Stussy. One of the companies got wise and took him in house and now you know Paul M as the Creative Director of Stussy Worldwide. I'm glad thru this strange world, our paths keep crossing somehow and we manage to stay close.
Anagram: TRASHED/THREADS...Fashion can be a nasty, dirty game. And I knew Paul would know that first hand.

deannecx.jpg
I don't mean to get all soft on y'all, but if I could create a dream woman in my mind, with no restrictions, that woman would be Deanne Cheuk. Talented, Hard Working, Creativity flowing everywhere, LES dweller, Aussie born, Perfect mommy to a perfect baby. What more can one person ask for? I think I first met D from The Fader days as well. But we got closer when she was the art director for Tokion Magazine and turned publishing design upside down. Then she went and did the same with fashion with her line Liness. She's one of those people that can do everything perfectly. Its just a matter of when she gets around to it.
Anagram: PRAISED/DESPAIR...One thing that Deanne is bad at, is accepting praise. She is just way too humble.

kimoux.jpg
Another magazine that we did art direction for was Sportswear International. This is back in 2000 or something. I was always looking for illustrators to do work for the mag and I stumbled upon a guy named Kimou Meyer aka Grotesk. He was currently working at the design studio, BASE. Imagine a graf head that spent his life in typography class. That's Kimou. Swiss trained graphic designer...but listened to one too many Public Enemy songs growing up. ("Fight The Kerning!) We've been mad close every since and he's one of the coolest dudes in the industry. You can currently find him as the Creative Director of Zoo York.
Anagram: Nameless/Salesmen...In "certain" circles of fashion, design isn't king. Product isn't king. SALES is king. And that's wack. Kimou did a hilarious rendition of what might happen in a parallel universe of streetwear.

xundershirts.jpg
But you know what? Sometimes, you want to just get your grown man on you know? You don't ALWAYS need some ironic, funny graphic on your chest. So I made these. Great fitting undershirts with a tone on tone one color front print: "A STAPLE UNDERSHIRT." A staple in your waredrobe.

silverbagx.jpg
All the tees are packaged in this dope silver ziplock bag. Be on the look out for it and always support the authnetic shit.

So that's the first six. All available at Reed Space and other select shops TOMORROW! Many, many more to come as 2007 continues on. As you can see, this ain't some cold callin'..."Yo, do this collab with me!" type project. Each and every one of these is from the heart. These people mean the world to me and if it weren't for them, in some small way, Staple wouldn't be what you know it as today. Stay tuned....

CHOCOLATE.

maxbaldman.jpg

I don't really have a huge sweet tooth. For instance, if I walk into a bodega and have the munchies, I will grab a bag of chips over a chocolate bar anyday. But one evening, by pure chance, I walked into MAX BRENNER, a newish cafe that opened in the East Village. Believe me when I tell you that only Satan himself could have created this chocolate. Its EVIL I say! EVIL! You must try for yourself.

INTER-OFFICE MAIL.

medicom3SBdunk.jpg
Thank you, Takashi for this great Nike SB Dunk x Medicom (4th one I guess?). It's really beautiful and classic.

10ac.jpg
Thank you, Wakako for these dope jackets. Left one is the new Caol Uno "10AC" Collection. Smartly designed performance pieces that look as good in the ring as they do on the street. (In case you were wondering, 10AC is Caol graphically spelled backwards.) The right one is part of Kiyonaga's new FCRB collection. Features some really cool venting and iPod integration.

allgone.jpg
Thanks to Michael and Sarah for a copy of All Gone. I hope they continue to do this each year. This culture deserves to live in a permanent world, rather than always speeding by in cyberspace. Seeing the products in this light gives it a whole new perspective to me. Stuff I might have given 2 seconds on some blog; I now get a chance to really study and appreciate. Keep it going!! We need this!

aj23.jpg
And finally, thanks to the guys at Mitchell & Ness and Dime Magazine for this baby. Probably the single most important moment for any sports/sneaker head, is now frozen in time with this beautiful set made by Mitchell & Ness in association with MJ himself. It's so rare that he does something without Nike and Brand Jordan, this is truly rare and quite honestly very surprising. But hey, who the hell else would you make a throwback jersey with?
The 20th anniversary jersey (which is the same jersey he made his infamous "foul line" dunk in) goes on sale on his birthday, 2/17/07. Only 500 will be available worldwide. Each jersey comes in a sick box set. Everything made in the USA. Each is hand numbered and labeled. And only 23 stores in the world have it. Reed Space will be one of them so come correct and bring your paycheck. This will set you back $400. Hey, owning a piece of history ain't cheap.

mjposter.jpg
(Remember this poster? What self respecting nikehead did NOT have this on their wall?)

puma_jordan.jpg
(Funny, as I did a google search for that Jordan poster, I found this. Interesting isn't it?)

RIDE JAPAN.

After setting up A NICE SET in Reed Space JPN, myself, HF, AK and a few others headed north for some deep powder riding. It's pretty amazing...1 hour north of Tokyo in a small town called Aomori and you are in the BOONIES. We had zero form of communications for the entire time. It was a winter wonderland for sure. I don't care what the experts say but I admit it: I get stressed out when there's no connection to the world. 4 days without internet, email and phones is rough for me. I can understand if you're gonna tune out for like 3 months or something. But that means you're doing something drastic to change your life. 4 days is just annoying to people. Also, you can't help but think about the avalanche of work you will have facing you upon your return. I much prefer to keep an organized state of controlled chaos while I am away, so I know everything is at least kosher, if not running perfectly.
Anyway, I did enjoy myself nevertheless. Dumps of fresh powder, natural volcanic hot springs, amazing food, good company...can't be topped.

jalhflawson.jpg
1 hour's flight from Tokyo takes you to this winter wonderland. Our first stop up there, loading up essential vitamins & minerals: Junk Food and Cup-O-Noodles.

Did I mention there was some snow involved?
hakkoda1.jpg
(Ohhhh, is this the reason we're all wearing homing beacons around our waist??)

hakkoda2.jpg
If you want the fresh stuff, you have to earn it. Much more hiking than riding on day one.

hakkoda3.jpg
And it was bloody steep.

indabus.jpg
Snowboarding is like life: If you want the good stuff, you gotta go find it yourself.

sukaru.jpg
But as in life, rewards are a plenty. Here is an old school "onsen" or public hot spring bathhouse. This particular one was co-ed which was new to me! (I swear its cold outside!)

hakkodachillin.jpg
After hours was HOT as we partied it up in the VIP Room sipping Cristal and smoking cigars with famous actors and rock stars.
...Or was it actually a combination of cards, Sony PSP, and passing in and out of consciousness?

realhf.jpg
The HF you never get to see. On his way to a basketball pick up game? haha...no, actually on his way to Onsen.

hakkodafield.jpg
We were luck to have even made it here because of the blizzard conditions. (First time I have ever experienced needing 2 tries to land the plane.) But I am glad we did. This place is really amazing. If you are into serious riding...come to Aomori/Hakkoda. (Those stumps are all trees by the way.)

A NICE SET / JPN.

nicesetvid.jpg
(Check out the video clip Plus et Plus made.)

There is nothing quite like taking a 14hr flight. Landing. Dropping off your luggage. Then proceeding straight to work thru the night for 7 straight hours. Did I mention that work entailed standing on the edge of a ladder hammering delicate pieces of art? Needless to say, thats what me and Jeremy Hollister did to prep for the opening of A NICE SET. It all paid off because the opening was a major sucess. Tokyo came out and represented...

niceset1.jpg
Lots of nails, screws, and fishing wire gets you this.

niceset2.jpg
Stargazers...

nicesetcrowd.jpg
Hollister with his friend Ai, Sakiko (Staple Spring Cover Girl) and Ito from Warp Mag, Brian from 852 HK representing with wifey!! (what a surpise!) and Akiko as well. And finally, a wallflower i would say...

nicesettomu.jpg
What's A NICE SET party without the DJ? Japan DMC Champ DJ Tomu rocked a crazy session. We even projected his special technics on the plasma screen.

nicesetpit.jpg
Good lookin out to all those that helped and supported. Till next time!
