HAPPY NEW YEAR.

First off, I want to wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year. HAPPY 4705!
まずはじめに、皆様に旧正月おめでとう！ハッピー4705年！


I recently went to check out Lupe Fiasco at Nokia Theater. It's really interesting. I went to see Lupe 6 months ago when he opened for The Roots. Now, he is selling out Nokia Theater all by himself as the headline act! And for better or for worse, the crowd was really interesting; a lot of young (I would guess high school kids) white suburbanites who knew the words to all of his songs. I felt I was watching a major pop star in the making. Big things are about to blow for Lupe. It was funny, I even saw old guys, who were obviously music industry or marketing dogs..typing into their Blackberry's: "At Lupe show. This guy is big. Lots of white kids. Tons of money here. We need to tap this." Haha...I am not joking.
I must say though that the opening act for Lupe, this duo who I think called themselves Optimist, was pretty wack. You know when you go to a Sizzler all-you-can-eat salad bar and absolutely nothing is good? That's what this group was like. They tried to do every genre of music under the sun...and at best, they were annoying. When performers on stage get boo'ed, I usually feel really bad because I know how tough it is to be on a stage in front of a crowd. People were throwing objects at them! But for them, I had no pity.
最近、ノキア・シアターでルーペ・フィアスコのライブを観に行きました。すごく刺激になりました。6ヶ月前、ルーペ はザ・ルーツの前座を務めていました。今やノキア・シアターを満員にしてメインアクトまでになるとは！良くも悪くも、観客層が面白かったです；ルーペのリリックをすべて記憶している若くて（たぶん高校生）郊外から着た白人キッズがほとんど。まるでポップスター誕生の瞬間を見ていたようでした。ルーぺは大物になりますね。観客の中には中年の人もいて、明らかに業界人やマーケティングのため、ブラックベリーに「ルーペのライブ観覧中。彼はビッグになる。白人キッズがいっぱい。必ず儲かる。要注目。」と戦略を立ていそうな人も。ホントに冗談抜きです。
でも、ルーペの前座をしたオプティミストと名乗る二人組みは結構ひどかったですね。ファミレスのサラダバーを頼んでも食べたい物がまったくなかった時とかありますよね？このグループを観たらそんな時の気分になってしまいました。彼らは色々なジャンルの音楽を試し。。。イラッとするぐらいすべてに失敗してました。普段パフォーマーがステージでブーイングされると、大勢の前に立つ大変さを知っているので気の毒に思います。物まで投げつけられていましたから！でも、彼らには同情できません。

Staple recently was asked by HBO to curate and help produce a series of limited edition hooded sweatshirt designs for The Wire's Fifth and Final Season. We came up with this idea to ask 5 artists to create 5 designs...one for each season. Only 20 pieces per design were produced and they were given to the cast and crew of The Wire and some were auctioned off for charity. It was a crazy stressful and rushed job, but I'm happy with the way everything came out...
ステープルは最近HBO（大手放送局）からザ・ワイアーというテレビ番組の5回目でファイナル・シーズンのために限定シリーズのフード付スウェットシャツを作る依頼が来ました。僕たちは5人のアーティストにシーズンごとの5つのデザインを考えてもらいました。デザインにつき20枚づつ作り、ザ・ワイアーのキャストやスタッフに配ったり、チャリティーオークションにも出しました。結果には満足していますが、この仕事は地獄のようでした。もう二度と一緒に仕事したくないリストに「テレビ局」を足さないと。「レーベル会社」の次に。

One last music treat to leave you with. These days, it's not enough for a DJ to come up with a dope blend. You have to make the video for it too! Pretty insane. Before I had a mixer, I used to make mixtapes with 2 tape decks and the "pause" button. Now kids are using Final Cut Pro and iMovie. Its crazy. It makes me feel old, but I also love the progression and innovation. I heard Erykah Badu's next album was made entirely on the Mac using ONLY GarageBand. Looking forward to hearing that one.
さして、最後にこの音楽のおまけを。 このごろは、ＤＪがいいミックスを作り出すだけでは物足りない。ビデオも作らないと！僕はミクサーを買う前は2つのテープデッキと「静止」ボタンでミックスデープを作っていました。でも、最近の若者はFinal Cut ProやiMovieを使っています。すごいな。ちょっと自分が年寄りに感じるけど、この進化と革新には好きです。次のエリカ・バドゥーのアルバムはマックでGarageBandのみで作らたそうです。聴くのが楽しみです。
