COMPETITIVE NATURE.
I recently read an article in the NY Times about American oil consumption habits vs the rest of the world's. As one might expect, we are the oil hogs of Planet Earth. I think we all knew that. But the way NYT graphically displays this information is both informational and astonishing. We're really pathetic when you look at this way. It really puts everything into proper perspective, as any good piece of information design should. The most telling chart is the one on the bottom left: Oil Consumption since the 1980s. While the rest of the developed world has realized it's time to cut back, we Americans just continue to guzzle away.
Americans are competitive by nature. We like to win. We like to fight. We like to brag. And I think pieces like this are really effective because it shows what a bunch of LOSERS we are. This is why we get so embroiled over things like NCAA March Madness, American Idol and Political Campaigns. We like to cheer winners and make fun of losers. And we like to play along. Have you seen a news channel coverage of the presidential race? It's like an ESPN update on the super bowl. They break shit down like its a game. I think we should treat the environment like a game. Maybe it will help Americans try to win this battle. When I was in Europe a while back, I commented on the flush water meters on top of almost every toilet. It turns saving the environment into a game and like I said before, something so simple could help so much.

I recently read this post from bobby: http://www.thehundreds.com/wordpress/?p=5021
It seems for americans this are high prices.
I converted this price to our german gas prices and you see how cheap american gas is.
49.37$ = 12.164 gallon gas
12.164 gallon gas = 46.04 liter gas
1 Liter gas in germany = 1.46€
46,04L x 1,46€ = 67,21€
67,21€ x 1.5424 = 103.66$
i love the Baum Windbreaker
a realy great film about ecology is An inconvinient truth by Mr. Al Gore. I think this film should be in TV rotation as often as it's possible. Lets save our Earth together!
Dunk Pigeon sick shoes :) i have it
I'm not quite sure if Americans are the only people who love to compete. People go crazy over sports in other countries as well.
But as far as the oil consumption goes, I definitely agree with this post. When I was in Spain, I realized lights in most of the public bathrooms shut down automatically when the facilities were not being used. And the amount of water used to flush the toilets was dramatically lesser than the regular American standards. Of course, some naysayers may say, "what the fuck does that have to do with oil?" But it has everything to do with oil if you think about it.
This comment is getting a big long. But big ups to this post! Maybe Jeff needs to make a shirt with statements concerning the saving of the environment, use a portion of the funds and make Reedspace into a solar powered boutique, or make a limited edition sneaker and donate the profit to an environmental organization.
JKey's idia about making shirts or sneakers is great, i think this product line will be very successful. Here in Ukraine, Kyiv i made a few caps with pine-tree and phrase - Save your earth.. its funny when people look in to your head and start smiling.
