Cali is a state of extremes. One minute you're flying over snow capped mountains. 30 minutes later, you're landing in Long Beach Airport in 75° weather. The great food is also an example.

California is synonymous with In-n-Out Burger. (Why can't they bring this to New York!?) I love their Protein Style Burger...which is a beef patty wrapped in lettuce rather than a bun. It's so good and you don't get that bloated feeling afterwards. But what I am about to say may be blasphemy to many: I tried the same protein style burger at Carl's Jr...AND IT'S BETTER.

Last week, Reed Space hosted a special preview of the Staple Fall/Winter 2008 Collection. This is stuff coming out in September-November 2008, so it's a very early advance showing of what we have coming out. Hence this event was open to close friends and fam. It was a great success and people seemed to really like the new stuff. It was especially fun for me. Every person I greeted was dope in their own right and it dawned on me at some point in the middle of the night that this was a pretty sick gathering of heads. Thanks to everyone involved that made the night possible. I'm looking forward to doing this again in the future.

PT3: WINTER 2008

Another chapter of PT3 has come to an end. And another year of Staple futility. It's getting frustrating. We've never made it past the semis in this tourney. This year, I was very pleased with my performance. I didn't even drop a set, not to mention a match. But alas, I couldn't say the same for my teammates Do and Sunny. They tried their best but we were beaten by Tyler and Team Rude. It was still a fun night in Brooklyn. The Powerhouse Arena is a sick facility! Thanks to Puma again for organizing another great night of cool peoples, good times and great table tennis.

One of my favorite clothing labels around is Soph and I was pleased to see a package arrive at the office from them. My second pair of slip ons this month. That's 2 more than I've owned the rest of my life prior! These Goretex Soph slip ons are dope. Even in the winter months, they keep your feet pretty warm. I also got this great Uniform Experiment necktie. UE is the collection created by Kiyonaga and HF catering to an older more sophisticated gentleman.

Veronica Webb stopped by Reed Space the other day to do a story for The New York Times fashion blog called "The Moment." In case you don't know the time, Veronica is a model, actress, writer and TV personality. She's the first African-American woman to land a cosmetics contract (with Revlon). Today, she's busy as co-host of "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style" on Bravo. She's also starred in Spike Lee's "Jungle Fever" and "Malcolm X". Holla at a revolutionary.

ST. BARTHS

I'm not usually a fan of beaches. I would much prefer spending some free time on the top of a snowcapped mountain. But for whatever reason, I felt like getting away this year to find some peace and quiet on a nice beach. Just to catch up with my own thoughts... Maybe because this year, I turned 33? I've heard that peace and quiet can be found on an island in the French West Indies called St. Barthelemy aka St. Barths. Its difficult access makes it a peaceful getaway, rather than a party getaway. Getting there requires a flight to St. Maartens and then either a 45 boat ride or a 15 min prop plane ride into St. Barths. But it was well worth the journey.
僕はあまりビーチが好きではありません。雪山の上で過ごしているほうが好きです。でも、今年はなぜか静かな時間をきれいなビーチで過ごそうと思いました。色々考る時間がほしくて。。。僕が33になったからでしょうか？平穏な静けさはカリブに浮かぶSt. Barthelemy aka St. Barthsという島にあると聞き行ってみました。少しアクセスが難しいのでパーティー旅行というよりはリラックスできた旅でした。島に行くには、St. Maartensまで飛行機で渡り、そこから45分のボートか15分のプロペラ飛行機の移動が必要でした。でも、そのくらいの価値はありました。

The Canon waterproof case I posted about before worked great! The long straps everywhere were a little cumbersome, but it did its job.

Like I said, you can take a boat or a plane there. I highly recommend the plane ride. The boat ride takes you through some REALLY choppy waters. And if you don't have your sea legs, you are going to lose your lunch. The plane ride is a little sketchy too, but at least it's only 15 minutes. The views are gorgeous also.
前に言ったように島に行くにはボートか飛行機に乗る必要があります。僕は飛行機がお勧めです。ボートではかなりの荒波の中を移動しますので丈夫な人でないとランチを失います。飛行機もちょっと不安でしたが15分しかかからないので。上からの景色も最高です。

H20 PROOF.

I just got this Canon WP-DC3 waterproof case for my digital camera. I knew I was about to visit some watery environments soon so I wanted to give it a try. It's really cool how these things work. It reminds me of those "build a better mousetrap" contraptions. Every function and button on the camera is usable thanks to a series of springs, levers and knobs. It definitely makes for a clunky device, but you don't want to lose your camera to the ocean do you?

INSPIRING ME...

Back in January when I went to Barcelona for Bread and Butter, I met with the man behind I HAVE POP. Do you remember a few years ago when some lunatic was leaving concrete sculptures of Nike's at selected stores without explanation or reason? That was this guy. His name is Juse. I love how he combines a really skewed way of thinking with a love for sneakers. And what does every sneakerhead need his life? Well, obviously a really dope scarf to protect his/her neck. Enter: Necklace Scarf. Only 10 have been made since these are so complicated to manufacture, making them puts human lives at risk. They're scarves made from custom 160cm long 100% cotton shoelaces. They are (not joking) hand knitted by elderly ladies in the Netherlands. 10% of the proceeds will be donated to arthritis research (no joke again). Like I said, 10 exist. And Reed Space has 3. You have to see the construction to believe it.
1月にBread and Butterのためにバルセロナに訪れた時に僕はI HAVE POPの責任者と会うことができました。何年か前に何者かがコンクリートで作られたNikeの彫刻を理由も説明もなくあるお店の前におかれていた事件を覚えていますか？それをやったのがこの人。彼の名前はJuse。すごく変わった思想とスニーカーへの愛情を混合する彼の作品はすごく好きです。スニーカーヘッドがみんな一つは必要なものは何？当然、首を守るカッコイイスカーフ。それがこの、ネックレススカーフ。人間の生命にかかわるくらい製造するのがとても困難なため10枚しか作られていません。これらはカスタムメードの160ｃｍの100%コットンシューレースから作られています。そして、これらは（冗談抜きで）オランダの老女の方々が手編みしました。売上収入の10%は関節炎研究のために寄付されます（これまた冗談抜き）。何度も言うように、この世で10枚しかありません。そのうちの３枚がReed Spaceにあります。造形をこの目で確認してください。

I'm really stoked for my man, MC Yan (aka Syan). He is part of Victoria and Albert Museum's "China Design Now" exhibition. You might know Syan from his MC days at LMF, the pioneer hip hop group from Hong Kong. He also runs the brand NSBQ which has done some of the coolest accessories in the past few years and he also created the Air Max 1 Clot Nike's (clear toe edition).
There's some other great work in the show as well. If you're in London, check it out.

Nike ACG is coming back for a rebirth and the new stuff I've been seeing from both apparel and footwear is dope. This extension of Nike was the shit back in the 80s and early 90s. Then got really boring recently. But now it looks like it's getting some proper TLC at Beaverton. Peep their website.

Vans fans will hate. But these are some dope sneakers I recently picked up from Bottega Veneta. They definitely are a rip off of Vans, but when you put them on, its a completely different story. Buttery dopeness.

MIAMI BD.

I have family in Miami/Ft Lauderdale and I went to visit them recently. It was a week before my birthday but they decided to celebrate early while I was in town. Whenever you visit family, food is always a big topic. I always eat stuff that I would never really eat in NY...for better or for worse!

Weekend brunch in NYC is a holy activity. We seem to be on a constant search for a private, close by, tasty spot...and then when the riffraff appear, the hunt continues again. Bubby's, Friend of a Farmer, Prune, Noho Star, Five Points, Freeman's, Twelve Chairs and many more have gone down in flames as brunch spots that now feature a 30 min+ wait. So now, when people ask me for my favorite spot, I have to say "No offense, but I would rather not say."
Here's my new spot. Please don't come.
週末のブランチはニューヨークでは聖なる儀式です。僕たちは常により近くて、プライベートで、おいしい穴場を探し。。。人ごみが増えるとまた探検がはじまります。Bubby's、Friend of a Farmer、Prune、Noho Star、Five Points、Freeman's、Twelve Chairsなどなどたくさんのお店がブランチスポットとして定番になり、30分待ちが当たり前になりました。だから、人に僕のお気に入りの場所を聞かれたときには「悪いけど、あまり言いたくない。」と言います。
ここが僕の新しい穴場。来ないで下さい。

Thanks to The Ebeling Group and MK12 for inviting me to a private viewing of their recent Sundance releases at Soho House. They have one of the best theaters in the city.
The Ebeling Group とMK12 に招待されて彼らのサンダンス映画のプライベート試写会をSoho House で観ました。ありがとうございました。ニューヨークでおススメする映画館のうちのひとつです。

SMIRNOFF. KRS. COMMON.

As I get busier and busier, and unfortunately, the time in each day remains the same, I go out less and less. But whenever I hear that KRS-ONE will be performing somewhere, I make sure I attend. I just feel like watching KRS perform is something fleeting. To me, it's one of the few times where you can literally witness history in action. And it won't last forever. Catch KRS whenever you have the chance. Smirnoff with support from Cornerstone has started something called the Signature Mix Series. They paired up KRS and DJ Premier, Common and Just Blaze and Q-Tip and Cool&Dre to make 3 remixes on their classic songs. The final product is pretty dope on their own right. VERY dope for what boils down to a marketing initiative for an alcoholic beverage. People always have backlash against corporate money raping the underground. But what happens when the result of that is actually dope? Then the question becomes more complex.
忙しくなっても、残念ながら一日の長さは変わらないため、外出する機会が減っていきます。でもKRS-ONEがショーをやっていると聞いたら、僕は必ず行くようにしています。KRSのパフォーマンスはどこか儚い。僕にとって彼のショーは、歴史的瞬間の証人になれる数少ない機会のひとつで、これもいつまでも続かない。KRSは必見です。SmirnoffがCornerstoneのサポートを借り、Signature Mix Seriesをはじめました。KRSとDJ Premier、CommonとJust Blaze、そして、Q-TipとCool&Dreがそれぞれタッグを組み、アーチストの代表的な歌をリミックスしました。出来栄えはいいです。アルコールドリンクのマーケティング戦術としてはかなりイケてます。みんなアンダーグラウンドの世界に企業マネーが入り込むのはいつも抵抗があります。でも、結果的にいいものができたらどうでしょう？そうなると、この問いの答えはもっと複雑になりますね。

CELUX & STUFF.

After an incredible 6 year run, LVMH's members only salon, CELUX will close its doors in the coming months. It was great to be able to work with CELUX and help them redefine the new meaning of "luxury". While sad and disappointing that they are closing, I find it to be poignant and also a clever move to step out of the game right now. I think the fashion and cultural landscape of the world needs to be figured out as a whole..from high-end fashion to street fashion to this concept of exclusivity to "limited edition"....it's just a very interesting time. With that said, CELUX asked some key designers...people who have helped and contributed along the way to be part of a collaboration project with Fred Perry providing the canvas. The list includes, Staple Design (NY), Libertine (NY), Duckie Brown (NY), Chatav Ectabit (NY), HTC (LA), Conrad Leach (UK), A Love Movement (LA), Suzukike (Japan), Jean Diadem (Japan. Designed by Japanese actor Asano Tadanobu), and Green (Japan). Only three pieces of each polo were made and it's only available to salon members.
Our concept was to bid farewell to Celux. I love the Elton John song, "Goodbye The Yellow Brick Road" and I thought it was fitting. Maybe in this case, "Yellow" more so representing "Gold". Haha. We added a touch of street by using a stencil and either spraypaint or acrylic fabric paint.
輝かしい6年間を経て、LVMH のメンバーズオンリー・サロン、CELUXがあと数ヶ月で閉店します。CELUX の方達と一緒にお仕事をさせて頂き、「ラグジュアリー」の定義を再認識させることに貢献出来たことを嬉しく思います。閉店する事は残念で寂しい気もしますが、この時期にこのような決断をしたのは賢いステップだと思います。今、ファッションやカルチャーの各界で考え直さないといけないことがたくさんあります。。。ハイエンドファッションからストリートファッションや「独占的」コンセプトと「限定品」など。。。アセスメントの時期だと思います。まあ、その後に言うのもなんですが、CELUXは今まで携わってきた数人のキーデザイナーとFred Perry のコラボプロジェクトをします。デザイナーは：Staple Design (NY)、Libertine(NY)、Duckie Brown(NY)、Chatav Ectabit(NY)、HTC(LA)、Conrad Leach(UK)、A Love Movement(LA)、Suzukike（日本）、Jean Diadem（日本、俳優の浅野忠信がデザインを手がけている）、Green（日本）。各ポロシャツは3枚ずつしか作られず、サロンメンバーにしか手に入りません。
僕たちはCeluxへお別れをいうためのコンセプトを考えました。僕はエルトン・ジョンの歌、「Goodbye Yellow Brick Road」が好きで、ピッタリだと思いました。今回のケースは「Yellow」ではなくて、「Gold」のほうがハマルと思いました。（笑）ストリートのセンスを残すためスプレーペイントかアクリルペイントを使ってステンシルでデザインを塗りました。
