The price tag on the box ($90.00) looks like a Niketown tag, but I can't actually recall getting them there. Ah well...that's what happens in your elderly years. According to sneaker lore, there was a legendary day where Tinker Hatfield went into the gym with his usual duffel bag of assorted shoes: A running shoe, a basketball shoe, and a tennis shoe. Then it hit him. Couldn't he create a shoe that was made to handle all those activities? You know, something that could be utilized for cross training. He went back to Nike and pitched the idea. They hated it. Why would Nike want people to stop buying 3 pairs of shoes and just buy one that could do them all? Luckily, Tinker didn't listen. (it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.) And lucky for Bo Jackson, Nike's biggest multi-sport athlete, he had something to rock when he said "Bo Knows." In retrospect, the entire collection of Bo Jackson endorsed Cross Training shoes were WAY ahead of their time. These 2004 retros of the 1991 originals were a must have for any true sneakerhead.

KINOKI.

I am a sucker for infomercials. I just tried these Kinoki Foot Pads out. They are supposed to suck toxins and heavy metals out of your body by using these pads that you stick to the bottom of your feet while you sleep. The verdict: It did "something". Not sure if it sucked out toxins. But my feet felt cool and lighter the following day. Not worth the nastiness involved in removing the pads though. Try it once. The shorts have the same concept but are cut in basketball shorts silhouette.

Damn, I wish i had this shirt in my high school math class. I'm still getting used to shooting quick with it, but I am definitely happy with the quality of my photos. Through the power of the web, a few people commented I should look into these 3rd party after market parts for the G9. There seems to be some guy in the midwest that machines these parts and they are so dope, it blends perfectly with the existing body and improves ergonomics of the camera. No fancy e-commerce website for this one. You just email him. Tell him what you want. He emails you back the total and the email to paypal the money to. And a few days later, you get the goods.

Custom Pistol Grip.

Custom Colored Lens Ring.

Thumb Rest.

I highly recommend getting these if you have a G9. As one might expect, we are the oil hogs of Planet Earth. I think we all knew that. But the way NYT graphically displays this information is both informational and astonishing. We're really pathetic when you look at this way. It really puts everything into proper perspective, as any good piece of information design should. The most telling chart is the one on the bottom left: Oil Consumption since the 1980s. While the rest of the developed world has realized it's time to cut back, we Americans just continue to guzzle away.
Americans are competitive by nature. We like to win. We like to fight. We like to brag. And I think pieces like this are really effective because it shows what a bunch of LOSERS we are. This is why we get so embroiled over things like NCAA March Madness, American Idol and Political Campaigns. We like to cheer winners and make fun of losers. And we like to play along. Have you seen a news channel coverage of the presidential race? It's like an ESPN update on the super bowl. They break shit down like its a game. I think we should treat the environment like a game. Maybe it will help Americans try to win this battle. When I was in Europe a while back, I commented on the flush water meters on top of almost every toilet. It turns saving the environment into a game and like I said before, something so simple could help so much.

IDIOM 2009.

Some photos have been floating around on the net of the iDiom 2009 Collection. Tokyo, Japan.
OTHER COMMENTS (その他): Finding this Footscape is a great example of sneaker hunting. It's not always about going to the sneaker boutique or Tier 0 account. A true sneakerhead will dig in all places. I found this dope style in ABC Mart which is kind of like the equivalent to Payless Shoes in the US. Finding gems within the in-line catalogs in other countries is a great feeling. The Footscape is the ugly duckling in the Nike family lineage. Great technology and great comfort, but people weren't quite ready to put this potato sack on their feet. It was a huge hit in Japan, but never really took off in The States. Hence you can usually find these at your local Nike Factory Outlet. They've recently been resurrected with hybrids like the Free and Woven Technology. But there is something about these little guys that will forever have a place on my shelf.

BAREFOOT.

New York Magazine recently talked about how we (mankind) are wrecking our feet with every single step we take. and early 90s, Streetwear was born. Somewhere in early 2000, companies with a streetwear mentality started making shoes and this idea of an independent footwear company was born. One of the earliest and best was Visvim from Tokyo. The founder of Visvim is Hiroki Nakamura who's lineage comes from Burton, Gravis and Idiom. This was my first pair of Visvims. Definitely not your average sneaker, but really eye-catching to say the least. The outer was inspired by a Woolly Mammoth Elephant. This would be the first of many Visvims for me. I love that with each season, I was able to witness the progression of this small brand. Today, it is one of the most innovative and well executed brands in the world.

WHY SPONSOR?

Sometimes, critics ask why sports companies like Nike spend so much on sponsoring athletes. Last weeks New York Sunday Times Sports section pretty much answers that question. This probably happens all the time in many publications...It just hit me though...on the cover alone, there are 6 Swoosh sightings. Imagine if Nike had to pay for 6 ad spaces on the cover of the Sunday Times? How do you make a doc that captures the interest of people who are not inherently interested in your subject matter? Benson did it. A true artist and out of all the contemporaries that have risen through the past 2 decades, he is one of my favorites. Theory recently asked David to do a live recorded paint session that spanned a week for their ICON PROJECT Series. According to Theory, "Ellis' paintings are often recorded in a form of digital time-lapse animation, which he calls "motion painting,” and screened with music or sound performances to interpret his works live. Ellis has been included in a variety of prestigious group exhibitions both in the United States, and abroad. His motion painting videos have been screened at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
Ellis' work for the Theory Icon Project comes in two parts. The first is a window installation and opposing billboard at the Theory Gansevoort store. The two birds, designed for Theory by David Ellis, were painted across from one another, creating an artistic exchange across Greenwich St. in New York's Meatpacking District.
Ellis then returned to the Theory Gansevoort store for a week long painting performance, (March 27 through April 3.) Ellis painted every day from morning until night in an airplane-hangar inspired structure, which he had built for the performance. A digital camera installed overhead inside the structure was programmed to take bird's-eye-view images of the artist at work. The digital stills were then compiled as video sequences, and scored by a composer who was on site for the entire week of the performance. You can now view the entire masterpiece on the Theory homepage.

+++

Erykah Badu's new Album (New Amerykah Part One) is the truth. I gotta be honest. The first 3-5 times I listened to it; I didn't know where the hell Erykah was going. First, you have to play it in your headphones. Makes a big difference as opposed to playing on your stereo as background music. Then after about the 5th time...it just clicks. And in an instant, it goes from being cryptic to being a masterpiece. "I STAY WOKE."
「Ｉ　ＳＴＡＹ　ＷＯＫＥ」

+++

A friend of mine stopped by the other day and we had a nice long discussion about THE TRUTH. It's interesting what people read and what people believe. Sometimes, the truth is simply one question away from being discovered. People are quick to judge. People are quick to point fingers and quick to blame. (I might have been guilty of this as well.) But how many people actually stopped and just asked "what really happened?" No one really knows and no one really needs to know. What's important is that homey is still smiling. Big up EDC.
Big up EDC.

MISS ME?

OK probably not. I finally got around to paying them a visit recently. I'm glad I did. Kiosk is a small store located in SoHo. They showcase a curated range of products from all over the world. Everything is sourced during their travels. Currently they are featuring items from Hong Kong. They have an "Ongoing" collection of objects from previous countries.
From their own words: "We opened the store to offer an antidote to over-design. We consider the objects we stock to be humble, straightforward and beautiful for their simplicity and directness. Often they are traditional goods that have developed over generations or anonymous design found in general stores, DIYs and kiosks, products created by not one personality but things that are the result of local aesthetics and needs. Their beauty is sometimes hard to see in today's market; our motivation to start Kiosk was to shed some light on these anonymous objects."

I was in the mood to pick up some old fashioned writing utensils for some reason. I got these great little boxes of chalk. The chalk is different from the American version as they come already with a point on them and they are wrapped in paper. Not the pre-fab cylindrical tubes we have. Also got a marking pencil. Check out Kiosk...it's worth the trip. They also do web sales on their site.

MURAKAMI.

Brooklyn was blessed with the presence of Takashi Murakami last week as he opened his first major museum retrospective in New York. I never got a chance to see the LA one (which I heard was better than NY's). But I'm glad us New Yorker's got a chance to check out his genius.

This was calling my name...

Then I came to find out the next remaining one available was #31 of 100. 31 was my hockey jersey number at NYU. It was also my beeper code (remember those??). I couldn't resist.

+++

The following day, I had dinner with my colleague and friend from LVMH, Asako. She brought along her very multi-talented friend Seia. Dinner was at the amazing Bouley Restaurant in Tribeca.

NCAA @ 40/40.

This past week was the culmination of the NCAA College Championships. The Memphis vs Kansas game was one for the ages. The Nike Recess Federation (NRF), took over the ESPN Suite at the 40/40 Club for a private gathering and viewing. It was great to see all these guys off the court and relaxed. It was just a great night. Good food, drinks, pool, a sick overtime game and even Jay-Z in the house!
On top of that, Nike iD brought a mobile version of their design studio (ID2U) to the room and fellas got to get their design on. AF1 Lows and all...thanks to PR/KOC/TC for an awesome time.
。。PR/KOC/TCn、最高の時間をありがとう。

NIKE AIR MAX 180 ID.

COMPANY (会社): Nike
STYLE NAME (スタイル名): Air Max 180 iD
ALIAS (別名): Air Max 180 Armstrong's
COLOR (色): Grey / Livestrong Yellow
SIZE (サイズ): US 10 / UK 9 / EUR 44 / CM 28
COUNTRY OF MANUFACTURE (製造国): Thailand
DATE MANUFACTURED (製造年月日): Dec 2004
CONDITION (状態): A-
ACQUIRED (購入先): 255 Elizabeth Nike iD Studio.
OTHER COMMENTS (その他): I'm not by any means Nike iD's #1 fan. But every once in a while, a style comes out that I feel I have to take part in...just because. After Lance Armstrong won his last Tour De France, Nike pulled all the stops on their celebration. This shoe really kicked off his 10/2 collection. (10/2 being the day that he was diagnosed with cancer.) The famed artist Futura was asked to do numerous collaborations with Lance and he developed a set of graphic icons that correlated to stages in his life. For the iD version of this shoe, you got to choose which Futura icon you wanted on the back. I took my customization one step further and ask the artist himself to sign these joints for me. He lay the perfect tag on the heel side. Thanks Lenny.
